On May 14, 2016, parishioners of St Pius X, Raiwaqa went on a pilgrimage to the Door of Mercy at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva. There were at least 200 pilgrims who turned up and give witness that day. The pilgrims were led by their Fr John McEvoy, the parish priest and Fr Clement Wanesubua, from the Solomon Islands (who is preparing for mission as an associate priest of the Columbans). Before the pilgrims started processing, Fr John gave a strong message about why the parish is doing the pilgrimage and reminded everyone present that “God’s love and mercy is far greater than our sin”.
The pilgrims started singing hymns to the Spirit and walking from St. Anne Primary School grounds at half past two in the afternoon toward the Sacred Heart Cathedral where the Door of Mercy is. Once at the cathedral, the pilgrims prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Joyful Mysteries with reflections and prayer intentions, and learned the message of Mercy through the Litany which was composed by Fr Paul Tierney, SSC, parish priest of Holy Family, Labasa (the said litany is also being used in Holy Family Parish where the Door of Mercy for the Northern Division is located). After the prayers, the pilgrims were graced with the presence of three other Columban priests, Frs Donal McIlraith, Richard O’Sullivan, and Dave Arms, who came to help provide Confessions for the pilgrims.
Finally, in thanksgiving and praise for all the blessings, the pilgrimage ended with the pilgrims animating the Anticipation Mass at 5:00pm—celebrating the Feast of the Pentecost.
